PaperBackSwap and BookMooch are two websites that allow readers to register for free and share books. Users type in the list of books they're willing to give away. For every book that you give away, you get one in return. Users can request books that others have listed to give away, or browse through titles to fill their own wish list. Unlike libraries, though, books exchanged this way never have to be returned. TitleTrader, Bookins and BookDepository are other options.
Free Downloadable Books for Homeschooling
Classic Literature, whose copyright has expired, is considered "in the public domain" and is available for free download from websites that distribute ebooks, or internet libraries. There are several digital library websites that allow visitors to download books for free or for the cost of an annual or monthly membership. There are also resources that offer the opportunity to download audio books through an online library
Public Libraries for Homeschool Books
Homeschoolers and public libraries go hand in hand. In fact, whenever homeschoolers move to a new town, the best way to meet like-minded families is often to visit the public library. Some families enjoy hundreds of books each week. Libraries generally have a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books to choose from as well as magazines, trade journals, government publications, reference books, books on tape, educational and entertaining videos and documentaries. CD's and DVDs are also available at some libraries as well as educational software.
A lot of people mistakenly believe that homeschooling is an expensive proposition, but the fact is that learning takes place even without worksheets and quizzes, and there isn't any kind of knowledge that can't be obtained for absolutely free, with the exception possibly of current military strategies, but that's often not part of a K-12 curriculum anyway. Public libraries have access to just about any book, as well as internet computers for visitors use. The Internet has paved the way for privately run book exchanges and free downloadable book resources.
